editing an entry with duplicates

I'm trying to edit a catalogue entry and SD won't let me because it says there is at least one duplicate. I've deleted that duplicate but I get the same message.

I haven't purged the deletion.

Does anyone know whether purging is necessary in order to persuade SD that I know what I'm doing?
